What Is Meditation?
Etymologically, to meditate means to measure, ponder, contemplate, reflect on, spiritually introspect.

In our view, meditation is the ending of thought and going beyond it. Meditation is not divorced from daily living but is being attentive to everything, without registering it as psychological thought. Meditation is the complete silence and emptying of the mind of the known, of everything that it has accumulated--all the images of oneself and of others.

What We Teach
We teach a combination of concentration techniques that are helpful to beginners. These include sitting meditation and walking meditation and basic yoga postures and breathing techniques. Students are later introduced to mindful and choice-less (non-judgmental) awareness meditation. They are encouraged to know themselves--physically, mentally and spiritually--and to inquire: What is the nature of thought and psychological time? Who am I? Where did I come from? Why am I here? Where am I going when I die? The class is secular and welcomes all beliefs.

Tsewang Namgyal
Tsewang Namgyal, a native Tibetan, lived in India, Nepal and Bhutan before settling in New York. He is a lifelong martial arts practitioner and a black-belt instructor in traditional Taekwon-Do. He has also studied Karate, Aikido, and Yoga.

He has 30 years' experience in the meditation practices of various traditions: Jodo Shinshu with Rev. (Sensei) T. K. Nakagaki, Burmese Vipassana, Zen and Tibetan Buddhism. Over the years, he has developed his own approach based on his experience and the teachings of
J. Krishnamurti.

His family hails from Kham in eastern Tibet, where they belong to the Nyingma, the oldest lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. But he does not adhere to any organized religion. His greatest inspiration and teacher is J. Krishnamurti; he is forever grateful to the Indian philosopher, mystic and sage.
